| Scope & Content | The Dr. Howard Robinson Collection, 1868-1956 29 cubic boxes, 2 1/2 boxes, 6 1/4 boxes; 38 cubic feet The Dr. Howard Robinson Collection consist of articles, NAACP branch files, Montgomery demographics, information on the Montgomery Improvement Association, and African American life in general ranging from 1868-1956. Born in Queens, New York in 1962, Dr. Howard Overton Robinson, II spent his formative years in Roosevelt, New York and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1981. While an undergraduate majoring in mass communications at Alabama State University, Dr. Robinson took a position with the Montgomery NBC affiliate, WSFA. In 1986, while still working at the TV station he completed a B.A. degree in communications. Dr. Robinson returned to ASU in 1990 to pursue a Master's of Arts degree in history. Inspired by ASU professor emeritus, Dr. Norman Walton, Robinson research and wrote on post Civil-War neighborhood development in Montgomery, Alabama. "Centennial Hill: The Building of a Prosperous Black Community, Montgomery, Alabama, 1865-1900." As a graduate student, Robinson made his career transition complete by taking a position at the Alabama Department of Archives and History. After completing the M.A. program in 1993, Robinson left Montgomery to attend the University of Akron where he pursued a Ph.D. in American History. At this level Robinson's research transcended neighborhood, as he explored the development of a homogeneous and tightly knit African American community in Montgomery, whose businesses, organizations, and institutions took shape after the Civil War and collapsed between 1970 and 1980. From 1998 to 2004, Dr. Robinson served as an Assistant Professor of African American History at Armstrong Atlantic State in Savannah, Georgia. During his tenure in Savannah, Dr. Robinson worked as a curator for the Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum, and he served on the Board of Directors for the King Tisdell Foundation, a post Civil War school for Freedmen, now a cultural arts center. Dr. Robinson returned to Alabama State University to serve as both the University Archivist at the Levi Watkins Learning Center and as an Assistant Professor of American History. Dr. Robinson also serves as the advisor to his fraternity, Omega Psi Phi. |
