Representative John L. Buskey Collection, 1963-1992 18 cubic boxes, 4 1/2 boxes, 2 1/4 boxes, 1 medium box, 3 large flat boxes; 30 cubic feet This collection includes correspondence relating to Rep. Buskey's position as Alabama State University's (ASU) Library Director, membership chairman of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People's (NAACP) Montgomery chapter and state representative in the Alabama Legislature. Representative John L. Buskey, 1938-1992 Representative John L. Buskey, D-Montgomery, was born on October 15, 1938 to the Rev. and Mrs. Charles Buskey, Sr. in Mobile, Alabama. John L. Buskey achieved much during the 54 years of his life, including great contributions to Alabama State University, where he began as an assistant librarian with Alabama State College in Mobile in 1962. He also received his bachelor's degree from Alabama State in 1962 and was an honors graduate. He took a break from employment in 1963 to attend Atlanta University (now called Clark Atlanta University) in Atlanta, where he obtained a master's degree in Library Science. Afterwards, he returned to ASU, where he held a succession of positions of increasing duties and responsibilities. He was appointed acting director of public relations in 1968. A year later, he was appointed instructor of library education and assistant university librarian. During the same period in 1969, he also was assigned duties in the Office of the Vice President for University Development. In 1971, he became acting director of University Libraries, and in 1973 he became director of Public Relations. He was admitted to the tenured faculty in 1976. Also, in 1976 he served as an instructor in library administration and as assistant dean of libraries and learning resources. In 1977, he was appointed director of the Levi Watkins Library and Learning Resources Center, a position he held until his death in 1992. In 1983, Buskey's was elected to the Alabama House of Representative, where he represented House District 77 as a democrat. He held important committee assignments in the Legislature, including the powerful House Ways and Means Committee and the Judiciary, Local Legislation No. 4 and Local Government No. 5 committees. He chaired both the Sunset and Reapportionment committees and co-authored the Reapportionment Plan that increased the number of African-Americans in both houses of the Alabama Legislature and on the State Board of Education. Representative Buskey's membership affiliations included the American Library Association, Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, Alabama Education Association, National Education Association, Alabama Legislative Black Caucus, Alabama Democratic Conference, Alabama State University Faculty Senate, the NAACP, first vice president of the Cleveland Avenue YMCA Century Club, the Metro YMCA Capital Fund Committee and delegate to the 1992 National Democratic Convention. He also was a member of the Board of Directors of the Friends of Carver High School Creative and Preforming Arts Center and the Montgomery Area United Way. |
