Dr. Clifford C. Baker Papers, 1991-1994 12 cubic boxes. 1 1/2 box, 1 1/4 box, 1 medium flat box; 1 folder sleeve; 16 cubic feet Dr. Clifford C. Baker, 1929-2019 This collection documents Alabama State University (ASU) milestones during the presidency of Dr. Clifford C. Baker. It covers briefly campus, state, national, and international topics that impacted the administration of the university. Dr. Baker served as Interim President from 1991 to 1994. On May 13, 1994, the Alabama State University Board of Trustees made him President retroactively. During Baker's administration the university enjoyed unprecedented growth in enrollment, physical plant, academic offerings, and scholarship gifts and grants from corporations and funding agencies. Dr. Baker, a 1954 alumnus, assumed leadership of his alma mater following retirement from the Alabama State Department of Education, where he had spent 13 years as Alabama's assistant superintendent of education. Soon after Dr. Baker's appointment as interim president, he established as his administration's theme -- "Alabama State University: Affirming Our Legacy of Endurance... Building a Framework for Survival." The signal accomplishments of Baker's administration are varied. ASU's enrollment reached a then all-time high of 5,600 students in the fall of 1993. In January 1994, the university had two ribbon cuttings for the 12-court Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center and 11-story men's dormitory, C. Johnson Dunn Tower. The previous year, the Joe L. Reed Acadome was dedicated. The football Hornets earned the 1991 Black College and Southwestern Athletic Conference championship; and two new, fully equipped buses, which transported the athletic teams and other organizations, were added to the institution's motor pool. The DeWitt Wallace-Reader's Digest Fund approved a four-year grant of $612,000 to expand its pathways to Teaching program. ASU's Biomedical Research program and Trio programs, including Talent Search, also received new funding. The College of Business Administration earned accreditation in the summer of 1993; and the university's social work program earned reaffirmation of its accreditation. During the summer of 1993, the Alabama Commission on Higher Education upgraded ASU to a doctoral-degree-granting institution. Baker launched ASU CHALLENGE, a gift-giving program that targets alumni and friends and designed to help Alabama State University to grow. |
