Dr. William H. Harris Collection, 1994-2000, 2008-2012 2 cubic boxes, 1 1/2 box, 1 medium box, 1 picture frame; 4 cubic feet. This collection consists of a description of William Hamilton Harris as the tenth president of Alabama State University. Papers in the collection cover the campus, state, national, and international subjects that impacted the administration of the university. William Harris brought 28 years of higher education experience to the university when he became ASU's president on June 1, 1994. A published historian and Fulbright Scholar and a native of south Georgia his goal was to transform Alabama State University through excellence and diversity. His vision of a comprehensive regional university was directly linked to implementation of the "Knight vs. Alabama" remedial decree, which expanded the university's mission, programs and funding. Harris embraced implementation of the mandates in "Knight vs. Alabama" by introducing an unprecedented number of high-demand programs, establishing the university's first major endowment and generating a record 10.5 percent leap in minority enrollment. ASU ranked as the No. 1 producer of African-American baccalaureate education degrees in the nation for two consecutive years; the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge Bowl team placed first in the nation; and professors in mathematics, biomedical research and economics attracted the national spotlight with groundbreaking research. During Harris' tenure, the School of Music's accreditation was reaffirmed and three prestigious centers were established; the Center for Leadership and Public Policy, the Business and Technology Center and the National Center for the Study of Civil Rights and African-American Culture. In addition, the Lady Hornets' tennis team and men's basketball captured the Southwestern Athletic Conference crown (SWAC). |
