President Harper Councill Trenholm Collection, 1925-1962 10 cubic boxes, 18 1/2 boxes, 18 1/4 boxes, 4 small flat boxes, 1 medium flat box; 28 cubic feet. Harper Councill Trenholm, 1901-1962 This collection consists of documents, correspondences, pamphlets, and photos of Harper Councill Trenholm's tenure as president of Alabama State College in Montgomery, Alabama from 1925-1962. Born on July 16, 1901 in Tuscumbia, Alabama, Harper Councill Trenholm, the only child of Ellen Brown and George Washington Trenholm, matured in a stimulating academic environment. The elder, George Washington Trenholm served as president of Alabama State from 1920 until he died in 1925, when his son Harper took over the presidency of the school. Trenholm led the school as it developed from a normal school to a full-fledged college, with five-year teacher training and a grantor of the Master of Education degree beginning in 1943. President Trenholm led the College to "Class B" accreditation by the Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, a separate agency organized for the accrediting of Negro Colleges and High Schools, in 1935. "Class A" accreditation was given in 1943 by the same Association. Later the College was included on the "Approved List" of Negro colleges as recognized by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). President Trenholm initiated the branch summer school programs at Mobile and Birmingham, Alabama and established the Branch College at Mobile. The school changed names three times during Trenholm's tenure. The name changes included State Teachers College in 1929, Alabama State College for Negroes in 1948, and Alabama State College in 1954. Two honor societies, Alpha Kappa Mu and Beta Kappa Chi were established on the campus during the Trenholm administration. During President Trenholm's administration the college acquired more land and added additional structures. The school acquired acreage south of Thurman Street which allowed for further expansion of the campus. Harper Council Trenholm erected several academic buildings during his administration. These structures included, William Burns Paterson Hall, John William Beverly Hall, and the William Hooper Councill Hall. Other building developments included the George Washington Trenholm Memorial Library, the George Hubert Lockhart Gymnasium, the campus dining hall, Hornet stadium, Bibb Graves Hall, a women's residence, and the Charles Johnson Dunn Sports Arena. It was during the H. Councill Trenholm administration that the Montgomery Bus Boycott occurred followed by a series of direct action programs which had reverberating effects on the college. Students and faculty gave sympathetic participation. Counteraction by state authorities resulted in censure of the college by the American Association of University Professors and litigation in the famous Dixon vs. Alabama State Board of Education case. The latter constituted basis of "due process" for college students in America. |
