President Robert Lee Randolph Papers Collection, 1981-1983 1 small flat box; 0.4 cubic foot This collection consists of a description of Robert Lee Randolph as President of Alabama State University. Robert Lee Randolph was appointed President of Alabama State University in 1981. The first formal presidential inauguration was held on April 17, 1982. During President Randolph's administration, the Title III Program was one of the largest singularly funded programs at the Alabama State University by the federal government in the fiscal year 1981-1982. The University received $400,000 in funding for eight programs. Part of the funds was used to establish WVAS-FM, ASU's radio station. The plan for developing a Comprehensive University Marketing campaign was launched. The School of Graduate Studies and the School of Continuing Education and Community Services were combined to form the School of Graduate Studies and Continuing Education. A total reconstruction of the College Work-Study Program was completed in 1982. The International Student Services and Domestic Student Exchange was established between Alabama State University and colleges/universities across the United States and foreign countries. In 1982, the University joined the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship (SWAC). The first Basketball team earned a berth to the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship. The first summer camp in basketball was co-hosted by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at the University. The annual Montgomery Open Tennis Tournament set-up was assisted by the Athletics Department on the University's campus. The videotape "The Forgotten Hero" (Production Phase of Freedom Grant), was produced and aired in the same year. The School of Music sponsored its First Annual Honor Band Program in 1983. Construction for Phase II of the Fine Arts Center began in 1983. Construction of the men's and Women's housing units (University Apartments) was completed in the Spring of 1983 for Fall occupancy. The Board of Trustees authorized President Randolph to accept a Department of Education College Housing loan and obtain an interim loan from a local financial institution to build the student housing unit. The Board also reaffirmed its earlier decision to name Levi Watkins as President Emeritus. |
