A native of Hale County, John William Beverly is considered among Alabama's first academically trained African American historians. He was born a slave in 1852 to Phillip and Betsy (Wynn) Beverly near Greensboro, Alabama. After graduating in 1882 from State Normal School in Marion, Alabama, Beverly took on principalship at Tullibody Academy for four years, his alma mater and then to moved with the State Normal School when it relocated to Montgomery in 1887. In 1882, Beverly joined other Alabama teachers in establishing the Alabama State Teachers Association. He served this organization as president and historian.
